Ripple Girls Do New York

Since I first saw the broadway show "Come From Away" I’ve been dying for my mom to see it. Then one day I just looked up tickets, emailed my Mom and sister-in-law and sisters and invited them all to spend a weekend in NYC with me.  We found a good date and it all just fell into place.  Even Naomi made plans to fly in all the way from Calgary.
Mom and Naomi and Hannah had never spent any time in NYC and it was so incredibly fun to wander around without any children and show them all my favorite places.  We walked the high line, did a hop on, hop off bus tour which really allowed us to get an overview of the whole city, took a ferry from Hudson yards and then walked to Battery park. Did the ferry to Ellis island and loved the tour, especially going past the Statue of Liberty.
Come From Away was amazing! It was fun watching them realize what a big deal Broadway is. All the theaters, the super long line for a show about "Newfoundland". The theatre was so beautiful inside and then the musicians started to come out on stage and Hannah was bouncing in her seat when she saw the fiddler. I think they loved it - my moms face was glowing when it was over. After a serious standing ovation we headed to the basement for merchandise. We were the last folks ushered out of the building and then we stood under the front awning talking so long we caught one of the actors coming out and totally had a conversation with him. So fabulous. Loved the late night treats and Magnolia bakery too.

Sunday we bicycled in Central Park - the whole big loop. Including a nice chat with a local eccentric. Then we had to say goodbye to Mom and Hannah and Naomi. Such a fun time.  Carrie and I killed a few hours by going to another show - "The Band's Visit"  the music was beautiful but I felt like I was watching a foreign language show - I didn’t get any of the jokes/culture etc. Clearly other people in the audience did. (Probably why I love Come From Away so much - I speak Atlantic Canadian. I know the culture - I get all the jokes, I recognize the music etc.)

Loved hanging out with my mom and sisters and sister in law. They are all beautiful and kind and thoughtful and hard working and adventurous. The very best kind of people!

  1. Jess, Thank you for all your kind words. Thank you for pulling us all together, away from busy lives, for that memorable weekend. Words cannot express the audiences reaction to the play"Come From Away": we were all united by our common humanity , and compassion expressed by those humble Canadians during that great calamity in the city of our best friends and neighbors. I saw NYC through different eyes and pieced together the familiar places that appear so often on the screen. I love NYC and I especially love my favorite people in all the world and time spent with them . nana r.

Divorced

Maybe you figured something was up and maybe not.  Tyrone and I have been separated for four years (2 years during covid just living in our house with all the kids, and two years Tyrone living in a condo we purchased nearby) now and just finalized the divorce this spring.  Compared to what I usually hear it was a pretty easy process and I think we are doing a fantastic job taking care of our kids together!  I'm super proud of us!  I feel so light and free and happy and confident.  And I've been on a few dates... all which were super fun and enjoyable and relaxing.  So happy with my life at this stage.  And a few cute date outfits for you: Fancy French restaurant in Durham.  First time having a bottle of wine uncorked and poured at the table. We are both big supporters of public education.  Nearby Mexican restaurant with lots of conversation about our Canadian roots. Playing cards at a brewery in Cary.  Started off so fun and silly. ...

Appaloosa Fest 2025

Mark and Blythe and I drove north and Courtney and Christine and Nicole drove south to meet us at the Labor Day Weekend  Appaloosa Music Festival for the third year in a row.  Georgia's dad's (Ben) band was playing !  They sounded amazing!  Mark's favorite of the whole weekend. Scythian played and we danced.  Then we got home to our haunted house super late and stayed up even later playing a game.  Sunday morning we hiked Knob's ridge.  And then back for a second day of music.  And Blythe taking care of the animals.  Monday morning Courtney and Nicole were feeling a little sick so they headed home.  Mark, Blythe and I hiked to the Seven Pools and then drove home too.  Great weekend! Blythe and I both had shirts on that we took from Courtney's good will  pile last time we were at her house.

I did not lose my faith I lost my belief

A few years ago just before Christmas Scotia asked Tyrone if Santa was real and he told her the truth. She'd been working up to it - wondering why I had a closet full of presents under a blanket, why the wrapping paper all matched, how Santa could get in the house without a proper fireplace, how could Santa make it around the world in one night, how could he get in houses without a key, why some kids got so much or so little or nothing... finally the evidence was just overwhelming and she asked Tyrone. Post Santa Christmases are just as good as Santa Christmases.  She loves helping me buy presents and she is chief wrapper now.
