After a very long and very late summer swim meet we settled everyone into bed, made plans for the next day and a few hours later were heading to the hospital for 5:30 am check in. Tyrone emailed a favorite co-worker with pediatric experience and asked her to help with the case.
The worst part by far was not being able to give Blythe a breakfast bottle after she woke up. She was far more disturbed about that than she has been with the broken bone.
It was crazy to see the pre-op unit in action. Tyrone knows everyone and they were all extraordinarily kind and helpful. When the surgeon showed up and saw Tyrone - he said, oh I didn't know you were with her .... And he was much more friendly and talkative than the night before.
We were pre-oped by the anesthesiologist and the anesthetist and the surgeon. Weird for Tyrone to be answering questions instead of asking.
Tyrone handed our baby off to Martha, CRNA and they headed back to the OR while we went to the waiting room. It took about an hour and half to place the cast and then we met Blythe in the PACU (post anesthesia care unit). She slept for an hour before waking up very peacefully. Her nurse Glen, RN didn't venture more than 3 feet from her bedside until she was awake and alert.
She spent a few hours in a room for observation. She took a nap and we did too on the pull out bed. Heavenly.
She is home and we are all adjusting to the big cast. Diaper changes are crazy and picking her up is a little like picking up a giant turtle. But it's day three now and I'm much more comfortable. Just 3 1/2 weeks to go.
And Blythe is still the sweetest and most chill baby on the planet.

ReplyDeleteWay to go Blythe--- even after being dressed up in a turtle outfit , you are still chill and pleasant! Your strength of character is becoming evident early in your life.
Grandpa says-- " Into every life rain must fall". In May, we had no rain. Our gardens and the forest were very dry. The woods were closed to campers, to minimize the chance of forest fires. When the rain came, we put on our raincoats and went on with our lives, grateful. We would rather have had sun, but knew that rain was an important part of our lives ,and necessary, to help our gardens to grow and flourish.
Lots of love from nana and grandpa
Oh my goodness Jessica! Poor little girl. I'm glad it sounds like she is handling it well. What an experience! Let me know if you need anything.
ReplyDeleteOh no! I pray these next 3 weeks go by quickly! I'm glad she is such a chill baby.
ReplyDeleteWow! That sounds stressful. Hang in there.
