Swimming in Atlanta

We headed down to Atlanta this past weekend for Taye's biggest swim meet ever!  He qualified to swim nine events at "sectionals" (Eastern Section of the Southern Zone for USA Swimming).  It was held at the Georgia Tech Swimming Pool, site of the 1996 Summer Olympics.

We stayed at the Marriott Marquis downtown and it was perfect.  They had a really nice indoor/outdoor pool and I stayed with the little kids in the mornings so they could play while Taye was competing.  The water was nice and warm and Blythe was happy to float around with me.

Friday afternoon we walked down to the Georgia Aquarium.  I heard it was not to be missed.  It was packed but did not disappoint!  The dolphin show at the end was amazing!

Saturday afternoon we headed to the King Center to look around. We took a tour of MLK's birth house the next day and it was amazing.  He came from a very well to do family by any standard but sounded like such a normal kid who grew up to be such an impressive leader.

Saturday evening we met Tyrone's aunts and uncle for supper.  That was so much fun.  They are wonderful people and love my kids so I love them.

The last morning we all went to watch Taye swim.  His best event, the 50 free was awesome.

He could see Tyrone in the stands.
He finished with a time of 25.69 - his first AAA time!  That time tied him for 23rd place and meant he had to do a swim off later that morning.

Discussing swim off with coaches
Just two boys swimming in that big pool to decide who gets 23rd place and who gets 24th.  All of Taye's teammates were right behind him.  Massaging his shoulders and pumping him up.  Taye won with a time of 25.12.  (If he had swum that fast in the main race he would have placed 11th!) I don't usually get wound up for races but I was shouting and cheering Taye on for the whole 25 seconds!

After all that excitement we went to the Food Truck Park for lunch. I loved this place.  Jaxon and Scotia shared a dish from a Croatian truck. Tyrone, Taye and I shared Venezuelan arapas and Southern BBQ jerk chicken.  Yum!  We sat at a picnic table and listened to a band play while the sun shone on our faces.  It might have been my favorite (or at least most peaceful) moment of the whole trip.

We toured MLK's house and then hit up The Varsity for supper before the long drive home.

Divorced

Maybe you figured something was up and maybe not.  Tyrone and I have been separated for four years (2 years during covid just living in our house with all the kids, and two years Tyrone living in a condo we purchased nearby) now and just finalized the divorce this spring.  Compared to what I usually hear it was a pretty easy process and I think we are doing a fantastic job taking care of our kids together!  I'm super proud of us!  I feel so light and free and happy and confident.  And I've been on a few dates... all which were super fun and enjoyable and relaxing.  So happy with my life at this stage.  And a few cute date outfits for you: Fancy French restaurant in Durham.  First time having a bottle of wine uncorked and poured at the table. We are both big supporters of public education.  Nearby Mexican restaurant with lots of conversation about our Canadian roots. Playing cards at a brewery in Cary.  Started off so fun and silly. ...

Appaloosa Fest 2025

Mark and Blythe and I drove north and Courtney and Christine and Nicole drove south to meet us at the Labor Day Weekend  Appaloosa Music Festival for the third year in a row.  Georgia's dad's (Ben) band was playing !  They sounded amazing!  Mark's favorite of the whole weekend. Scythian played and we danced.  Then we got home to our haunted house super late and stayed up even later playing a game.  Sunday morning we hiked Knob's ridge.  And then back for a second day of music.  And Blythe taking care of the animals.  Monday morning Courtney and Nicole were feeling a little sick so they headed home.  Mark, Blythe and I hiked to the Seven Pools and then drove home too.  Great weekend! Blythe and I both had shirts on that we took from Courtney's good will  pile last time we were at her house.

I did not lose my faith I lost my belief

A few years ago just before Christmas Scotia asked Tyrone if Santa was real and he told her the truth. She'd been working up to it - wondering why I had a closet full of presents under a blanket, why the wrapping paper all matched, how Santa could get in the house without a proper fireplace, how could Santa make it around the world in one night, how could he get in houses without a key, why some kids got so much or so little or nothing... finally the evidence was just overwhelming and she asked Tyrone. Post Santa Christmases are just as good as Santa Christmases.  She loves helping me buy presents and she is chief wrapper now.
